Near the village were found graves from the roman age and an iron pike from the 9th century. The first written memories derive from 1279, mentioned the village as Villa Chak. Later there was called as Czak and Czaak, too. In the 13-14th century it was the estate of the family„Németújvári” firstly as a part of castle Saint Vid, then as a part of Rohonc. In 1405 King Sigmund presented it to palatine Miklós Garai. Since than its gestors were the proprietories of Rohonc: Jacob Morgenwerder – the military officer of King Matthias – The family Baumkirchner, and finally the family Batthyány. The disasters of the 16-17. century did not avoid neither this village. In 1573 soldiers have burnt it, after the battle of the Bocskai rebellion 12 houses from the 17 were destroyed. Till the end of the 19th century the village had prestigous grape and wine culture, the epidemic phylloxera had raved. The grape was replanted but it never got back its old notability. The former important chestnut and fruit culture received the grape’s function . In place of the old church a new one was built according to the plans of Ludwig Schöne in 1894. The under monument defence standing little cellars are very interesting in the neighbourhood of the village. These buildings are used to store fruit and chestnut. More and more people buy weekendhouses in the little village (about 230 inhabitants) because of the clear air and the beautiful milieu. Resource: www.koszeg.hu |
