This village was a very important crossing station on the Raab from the ancient roman times, because the trading line between Sabaria and Sophiane ran off at this point. The ruins of the bridge over the Raab and of the custody of soldiers are explored. The pillars of the one-time roman wooden-bridge you can see in the river, but just on the so called part gerthárt. The cemetery belonging to the custody is also well-known. The town was firstly mentioned as terra Rum in a certificate of the chapter of Vasvár. In 1260 it is already signed by the name terra castri Rum, referring to the custody of the crossing point over the Raab.
In the middle age the castle and its surrounding belonged to several proprietors and were conquistated by the turkish army because of its strategically important location and the bridge over the river in 1532. In 1869 almost the whole village was burned in a combustion. In 1894 the railway traffic departed from Szombathely, which emerged the importnace of the village int he county. Rumi Rajki István, the famous scuplture, was born il 19 August 1881.
